Program Highlights

  • Cruise the Rhine River to see medieval castles located on both banks of the river to the ancient German city of Koblenz.
  • Tour of the St. Martin’s Cathedral in Mainz, completed in 1009 followed by a visit to the Gutenberg Museumwhere we will learn about printing and its contribution to faith and the Reformation
  • Visit the Castle of Frankenstein, the Bach House (Home of Johann Sebastian Bach) and Wartburg Castle.
  • Journey to St. Bartholomew’s Cathedral in Frankfurt, St. Peter’s Cathedral in Worms, and the Berliner Dom Cathedral in Berlin, among other churches.
  • Explore the legacy of Martin Luther in Wittenberg and Erfurt, where the clash between Cathedral and Castle took on revolutionary meaning.
  • Witness the Berlin Wall, Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp, and the Pergamon, one of the world’s most important museum
  • Experience the food, culture, people, and scenery of Germany!

CHRS 300 Special Topics in Religion: Castles & Cathedrals will explore the tensions of church and state, faith and power as seen in the architecture and cities of Germany, from the Medieval height of Cathedral and Castle building, through the Protestant Reformation, and on into the 20th century, where the Confessing Church defied Hitler’s Germany when others were silent. No prerequisite required. Fulfills Humanities GCC requirement.
