What is FERPA?
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, 20 U.S.C. § 1232g (FERPA) is a Federal law that protects the confidentiality of student information. More specifically, FERPA protects personally identifiable information in students’ education records from disclosure without written consent unless an exception to the consent requirement applies. FERPA at Campbell University
At Campbell University, FERPA protections go into effect on the first day of classes of the student’s first term of enrollment. As outlined in Campbell’s FERPA Statement, FERPA affords students who have attended a post-secondary institution the following rights related to their education records:
- Inspect and review information in their educational records.
- Request a correction to their record.
- Have some control of the disclosure of personally identifiable information from these records (restrict the release of directory information or authorize the disclosure of non-directory information).
- Share academic records and financial records with parents and guardians.
- File complaints with the U.S. Department of Education Family Policy Compliance Office (600 Independence Av SW, Washington, DC 20202).
