Your resume and cover letter earned you an interview! Add polish to your presentation with business etiquette and consider the following:
Professional Appearance
You want to have a well-groomed hairstyle, clean fingernails, limiting the amount of perfume/cologne, with minimum accessories such as a watch or ring.
Suits should be conservative in black, navy, or gray, with pants hemmed to the top of your shoes. Shoes should be closed-toe and polished, make sure they make your suit. Shirts should be light in color, long-sleeved for men and a blouse for women. *Khakis are considered business causal.
You should not wear short shorts/skirts, t-shirts, jeans, sandals, or anything see-through.
It is recommended to research your company prior to your interview to learn if their attire is business professional or business causal.
Professional Communication
Communication is key in any workplace. It is important to maintain professional communication throughout your entire interview process. There are four (4) types of professional communication:
- Nonverbal communication includes facial expressions, posture, gestures, and eye contact.
- Verbal communication factors are pitch, tone, and content of your discussion.
- Visual communication includes content and tone of presentation.
