Divinity School | Dr. Derek Hogan


From Dr. Andrew H. Wakefield, dean and professor, Campbell Divinity School: 

Dr. Derek Hogan, assistant dean for academic programs, associate professor of New Testament and Langston Chair of Religious Education, is the 2022 recipient of the Dean’s Excellence in Teaching Award for Campbell University Divinity School.

Dr. Hogan joined the faculty of the Divinity School in 2002, serving as the theological reference librarian and instructor in New Testament. In 2006 he was promoted to assistant professor while still serving as the Theological Reference Librarian, and in 2011 he was promoted to assistant dean for academic programs and assistant professor of New Testament. He was promoted to associate professor in 2021 and to associate dean in 2022.

Throughout his time at the Divinity School, Dr. Hogan has combined a passion for excellence in teaching with exemplary service to the school and to the university. His winsome and encouraging spirit and his ability to explain even the most complicated matters with grace and clarity makes him a favorite among students. Dr. Hogan personifies the mission statement of the school, being Christ-centered, Bible-based and ministry-focused.

Dr. Hogan has served with distinction as assistant dean for academic affairs. In this role he has led the Divinity School faculty in the review and revision of curriculum and assessment, faculty evaluation, reaffirmation of accreditation with the Association of Theological Schools, and more. He has played a key role in the development of grant proposals, leading to the recent award of a $1,000,000 grant from the Lilly Endowment, Inc. In the larger university Dr. Hogan has served on numerous committees, including helping with SACSCOC reaffirmation of accreditation and revision of faculty handbooks across the university.

Dr. Hogan, a native of Lineville, Alabama, graduated from Baylor University with a Ph.D. degree in Biblical Studies; from Duke Divinity School with a Master of Theological Studies (Magna Cum Laude) with a concentration in Biblical Studies; and a Bachelor of Arts degree (Summa Cum Laude) in Religion from Samford University.  

Dr. Hogan and his wife Stacie, a pharmacist, own and operate Hogan’s Pharmacy in Lillington. They are members of Memorial Baptist Church in Lillington, where Dr. Hogan has served as a deacon and chair of the diaconate.

It is with grateful appreciation that the Divinity School recognizes Dr. Derek Hogan for his steadfast and devoted efforts to Campbell University Divinity School and its students.  We are proud to recognize him today, not only for the 2022 Dean’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, but more than twenty years of excellence in teaching, leadership, and service to Campbell University Divinity School and its mission.
