Title IX Basics: 9 Things Every Student Should Know
-
Title IX Protects All Camels!
Title IX applies to all students, staff, and faculty. Title IX is a federal civil rights law that prohibits discrimination based on sex in any Campbell University program or activity. This includes admissions, athletics, academics, and employment.
-
It Covers More Than Athletics
While Title IX ensures equity in men and women’s sports, Title IX applies broadly to all aspects of education, including classroom instruction, housing, financial aid, and university activities which may be held on or off-campus.
-
Sexual Harassment and Sexual Violence = Title IX
Sexual harassment is a form of sex discrimination. Unwanted sexual comments, jokes, or other sexual misconduct such as making and sharing non-consensual photos and videos may fall under Title IX.
Dating violence, domestic violence, stalking, and sexual assault (fondling, rape, and non-consensual sexual contact) are also covered by Title IX.
-
Off-Campus and Online Incidents
If an incident affects your ability to participate in university programs, you may seek support by contacting the Title IX Coordinator. Students may seek Title IX Supportive Measures (academic accommodations and connection to resources) even if an incident occurred off-campus, or through online and digital platforms.
-
Schools Must Have a Title IX Coordinator
Every education institution receiving federal funds must designate at least one Title IX Coordinator responsible for compliance, training, and handling complaints. Campbell University’s Title IX Coordinator is:
Danielle Evans
Director of Compliance & Title IX Coordinator
Campbell University
phone: 910-893-1217
e-mail: titleix@campbell.edu
-
You Don’t Have to File a Formal Complaint to Get Help
Title IX Supportive Measures (like counseling, housing modifications, excused absences and more time to complete missed academic work) are available without starting a Title IX investigation.
-
Retaliation Is Prohibited
It is unlawful for schools or individuals to retaliate against anyone who reports a Title IX violation, receives Title IX Supportive Measures, or participates in an investigation.
-
Title IX covers Pregnant and Parenting Students
Students cannot be forced out of academic courses, extracurriculars, sports, honors programs or other university programs or activities, due to pregnancy or related conditions. Students may seek Title IX Supportive Measures for academic adjustments including breaks and reasonable alternatives, other accommodations, and lactation support.

Confidential Resources Exist
Not every conversation with Campbell employees triggers a report to the University’s Title IX Office. Certain types of conversations are legally protected to allow open and honest dialogue. University clinical mental health counselors at Counseling Services, medical professionals at the Health Center, pastors, and attorneys at Campbell’s Law Clinics can be a confidential resources.
