Become an Orientation Leader

The Orientation (TARTAN) Leader is a volunteer student leadership position designed to serve others. Orientation (TARTAN) Leaders are an instrumental part of welcoming our newest Camels to Campbell University.

Orientation (TARTAN) Leaders are instrumental in helping new students find their way into our Campbell Community. In staying within the coronavirus guidelines, these leaders will connect with new students virtually throughout the summer via telephone, e-mail and social media. These efforts will be to help each individual student feel welcome and connected. Main Campus students will move in early and participate in a 3-day TARTAN experience. The Tartan is a hybrid experience aimed at ensuring students are prepared with the tools necessary to navigate the first week and transition them into their Freshman Seminar while actively supporting their social integration into the camily. To ensure the best possible experience we are recruiting approximately 70 Orientation (TARTAN) leaders.

Orientation/Tartan leaders will need to attend or assist with any Face-to-face new student events, All Orientation Trainings, and be available to assist students and families on TARTAN Days.

Orientation/Tartan Leaders will answer student and family questions, assist others in navigating the university, and assist the Student Life and Admissions staff as needed.

Orientation/Tartan Leaders will be placed into one of two crews:

  1. Event Planning, Community Development, and Virtual Engagement
    1. Plan and implement face-to-face events that create a sense of community and excitement within safe covid-19 guidelines.
    2. Plan, implement and host live interactive events on virtual (remote/Social Media) platforms
    3. Coordinate all-community service project(s)
    4. Assist students, families, and Tartan groups in navigating campus and finding locations
    5. Provide quality customer service to all university visitors by welcoming, holding doors, answering questions, etc.
    6. Facilitate a campus feeling of welcome with spirit and tradition décor, paraphernalia, and energy.
  2. Group Facilitation, Individual Belonging, Welcome and Social Integration
    1. Lead a group of 10 – 20 students through the schedule of events.
    2. Lead a group of students through get-to-know you exercises, icebreakers, energizers and team building activities.
    3. Lead a group of students in informative conversations about campus resources and navigating Campbell University.
    4. Help students feel at ease with the transition to college by proving their own personal experiences.
    5. Assist students and families in navigating campus and finding locations
    6. Provide quality customer service to all university visitors by welcoming, holding doors, answering questions, etc.

Qualifications & Selection Criteria

  1. Successfully complete the written application and interviews
  2. Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0
  3. Be in good standing with the conduct office
  4. Possess a desire to:
    1. Create an engaged campus culture
    2. Leading and motivate others
    3. Gain leadership and involvement experience
  5. Be familiar with campus resources
  6. Exhibit a commitment to Campbell University and the Tartan program as a whole
  7. Participate in all designated trainings and orientation sessions
  8. Skillfully Multi-task and effectively work with diverse groups of individuals, including peers, students, faculty, staff and parents.

Interviews

  1. After submitting an online application, candidates may be contact to confirm a group interview time. 
  2. Candidates successfully completing the group interview may be invited to an individual interview.

Remuneration

This position is a volunteer leadership position. Orientation (TARTAN) Leaders will receive a t-shirt and other Campbell paraphernalia as well as receive complimentary housing and meals during the orientation training and sessions.

Training & University Events

Training for the Tartan Leader position is MANDATORY. Tartan Leaders are expected to participate in all training sessions. Alternate accommodations may be arranged for time conflicts with academic classes only.
