Dining with Diabetes

Dining with Diabetes is a cooking school for people with diabetes and their families.  The program teaches how to make healthful food choices for people with diabetes and provides healthy versions of familiar foods. The class also includes demonstrations on the proper cooking techniques for such products as artificial sweeteners, reduced fat foods, herbs, and spices.  For additional information on the upcoming Dining with Diabetes classes please contact Lisa_Childers@ncsu.edu

The Diabetes Bus

The Diabetes Bus provides access to quality diabetes education and support to those living with diabetes in underserved communities or underserved populations in North Carolina.  This program is sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation.   Must be referred by your doctor in order to participate in this three-class series taught by a certificated diabetes educator.  Currently the Diabetes Bus makes stops at the Benson Area Medical Center every Wednesday from 10 am until 12 noon.

Grocery Store Tours for Individuals with Diabetes 

Ms. Denise Newkirk from the Harnett County Health Department conducts “Grocery Store Tours” for individuals with a diagnosis of Diabetes. The tours will last approximately 45 minutes. The first tour is usually held in the morning and the second tour in the afternoon. 

The tour will consist of assisting the individual with how to select healthy foods from your local grocery store to assist with your management of your diet. 

Please contact Ms. Newkirk at 910-814-6196 if you need further information or wish to sign up for these tours. In June the tour will be located in Coats and July in Spring Lake. This service is free of charge and you do not need a physician’s referral.

Winning with Diabetes 

Winning with Diabetes is an annual community program for people with diabetes, families, friends, and health care providers.  This is an all day self-care management program designed to empower people with diabetes to make positive changes in their diabetes care and to motivate them to become their own diabetes team leaders.  During the program, there will be an opportunity for eye, foot, blood pressure and cholesterol screenings.  Pre-registration is required due to limited space.  The cost for one person is $25.00 and $20.00 for each additional family member.  Registration fee includes supplies, breaks, lunch, and production costs.  To register return form to Eastern AHEC or if paying by credit card may fax completed form to 252-744-5229 or register online at http://eahec.ecu.edu.

Partners in Pumping 

Is an Insulin Pump Support Group brought to you by Diabetes Management Solutions.  This program is for both adults and children using or interested in learning more about insulin pumps.  Meetings are scheduled for the first Thursday of every month and provide quality diabetes education and support to underserved populations.
