| As the world of computers grows, questions
arise that need to be answered. We at Computing Services strive to
answer those questions in the best manner possible. To that end, we
provide the following information: Am I Secure?
Students are required to update their computer's software, whether
it be Windows or other software. This will protect your machine.
A simple way to check the software on your computer for updates is at
following site:
Secunia.
Anti-Virus
Students must have
Sophos Anti-Virus Corporate Edition installed on any machine that will
be connected to the Campbell University network. This product is
available for no charge to all current students and may be downloaded
here.
Windows Updates
Students must have all high-priority patches and updates for
their Operating System (i.e. Windows 2000, Windows XP, etc) from
Microsoft's Windows Update site. This is required to help protect
each student's machine from various attackers. Instructions with
pictures are available
here.
Note: This only works in Internet Explorer. If you are viewing
this page in Firefox or any other browser, please open the link in an
Internet Explorer window.
Spyware
Students are recommended to remove spyware from their computer systems.
While there are several products available for this purpose, we have
tested several to not have spyware in them. We make the following
recommendations and include instructions in their installation and usage.
Student Email
Most universities issue an email address for their students and
Campbell is no exception. All students are issued an email address
upon confirmation of registration and can access it through the Campbell
home page. For more information, click here.
Wireless Access
We are in the process of setting up the academic buildings on campus
with wireless access. At present, there are no plans in place for
wireless connections in the dorms. For more information on
availability or instructions on setup, click
here.
Registering Alternative Systems
Many students come to campus with XBoxes, Playstations, and other
systems that connect to the internet, but do not connect automatically
through NetReg. Those machines have to be manually registered and
information on that process can be found
here.
Starting Out
One of the bewildering things to do before coming to college is
gathering the materials you need. Here is a convenient
guide with
suggestions as to what kind of computer you might want to look at before
coming to Campbell.
