Mr. Smith Goes to Berlin… Again.

Sshhhhh… I’m writing this at 4:30AM, so I need to keep it down. Right now you’re probably thinking, “What on earth is this guy doing up at 4:30?!” All I can say is that jet lag is a strange, crazy sensation. Basically, if you don’t have a strict schedule, which I currently don’t, then flying a substantial distance to the East creates a very difficult transition! I digress; it’s a pain, but why not use this spare time to write you folks a blog?

Having enjoyed Christmas in Berlin with my family, even bad jet lag can’t keep my spirits down! I don’t have anything to compare it too, but Christmas in Germany and Berlin in particular, is phenomenal! Just the other day I had a ½meter bratwurst at a Christmas market! Indeed, that’s 20 inches folks – they had to fold it in half to get it onto the baguette for me to eat! Incredible! The lights in the center of the city along the historic “Kurfürstendamm” get to me every year, especially when I manage to get the front seat on the top of the double-decker public bus. I would love to show you a few examples, but unfortunately my camera doesn’t do well taking pictures at night… in other words, we’re having technical difficulties, please be patient!

OK we’re back! To wrap things up, I realize that this entry didn’t have anything to do with roommates, and that is because during break, you rarely get to see them! It’s wonderful to be with your family again, but after a while you do get the itch to get back to The Creek to wreak havoc with your roommates! [By “wreak havoc” I mean to “be contributing members of the community,” of course]. To get an idea of what Ryan and I were doing towards the end of the semester, check out Ginnie’s blog (how’s that for a plug?), she covered pretty much all of our musical exploits, and even included pictures! Wow! All you have to do is finish reading this, hit the “Back” button on your web browser, and check out Ginnie’s concert wrap-up. That was easy!

This method may seem lazy to you, but let me quote Ryan on this one: “That isn’t lazy, it’s efficient!” Indeed. Have a wonderful New Year everyone!

Introducing Smith…

Hi, this is Ryan introducing Erik Smith.

Some people were born with a silver spoon in their mouths. Erik had a basketball…which may explain why his head is so large. But to be fair, the guy is 6’6’’ tall, so it is about proportionate.

Besides being a terror on the basketball court, he is also an accomplished tenor saxophonist, and is fluent in German. Some people call that a “triple threat.” I call it “showing off.” Either way, he picked up all of his interests living as a missionary kid in Berlin, Germany during most of his life. As a result, he has a decidedly European slant on things, which makes him an interesting person to play Scrabble with (I didn’t know that “verknift” was a word).

Because Erik is “altitudinally gifted,” he has a pretty nifty radio voice that makes his Mass Communications major a fitting choice. Some day we all hope to hear Erik dishing out the world news, but for now we’re both content to bring you the current events from our own little corner of the world at Campbell University.

Introducing Chriscoe…

Ryan Chriscoe hails from the far-away town of Angier, North Carolina, which is an entire 15 minutes or so removed from campus. It took him a while to get used to being at college and so far away from home at the same time, but I can say that he’s adjusted quite well.

A psychology major, Ryan analyzes his friends constantly, making guesses as to their mental condition... of course, his intentions are for the best.

Ryan can usually be found playing some sort of musical instrument, including the alto saxophone, guitar, piano, mandolin, or the ten-penny whistle. He’s even known to show up in my room to play my Tabla, a traditional drum from India.

Of course, Ryan is also the roommate of yours truly. We’ll both do our best to portray the good, the bad, and the ugly sides of living with roommates… enjoy!
