Halls’ gift to chapel is way to give back
Rebecca and Tim Hall, of Fuquay-Varina, N.C., have made
a gift to Campbell University’s Robert and Anna Butler Chapel capital campaign.
The $6.8 million chapel will be part of the Divinity School campus, providing a
spiritual sanctuary for the Campbell community and an exceptional worship and
teaching facility for divinity students.
“I wouldn’t consider us philanthropists,” said Rebecca.
“But even the smallest gift is significant because it goes to the greater good.”
Rebecca, who is a student at the Campbell Divinity
School, said coming to Campbell was the answer to a 20-year prayer.
“I wanted to go to seminary after I graduated from
college, but there never seemed to be enough time or enough resources,” Rebecca
said. “Campbell University for me is an example of God’s blessing and we wanted
to give back to that.”
Both Tim and Rebecca believe in the chapel project.
“We both feel the need as part of our relationship with
the Lord an obligation to be good stewards,” said Tim, the controller at C&D
Insurance Service in Angier. “I saw the Divinity School’s need for more space at
some of the events I attended, and I thought the chapel would be a good place to
invest in God’s kingdom, to provide a good place to educate kingdom-builders.”
Included in the Butler Chapel complex will be a
sanctuary, gathering hall, bell tower, the tallest point on campus, and a Prayer
Room for quiet contemplation and individual prayer. Also planned are numerous
sites in the surrounding gardens for study, fellowship and meditation.
“There was a chapel on my college campus when I
attended school,” Rebecca said. “It was a place for reflection, a good place for
me.”
The chapel will be the capstone of the university,
according to Campbell President Jerry M. Wallace. “It will be a permanent
statement to all of this university’s unashamed commitment to Christ and to the
mission of Christian higher education,” he said.
