Roukema receives Dean’s Excellence in Teaching award
Dr. Lorae Roukema, assistant professor of the School of
Education, has received the Dean’s Excellence in Teaching Award from the
Campbell University School of Education.
Roukema, who resides in Broadway, N.C., came to
Campbell University in 2003. She left a career with North Carolina public
schools in which she had served as a principal, assistant principal and middle
grades teacher.
“The School of Education was fortunate to have Dr.
Roukema change her career focus and decide to move into higher education,” said
Dr. Karen Nery, dean of the School of Education. “Her boundless energy,
perpetual excitement and true love of middle grades has moved the middle grades
program from a stagnant pool with a handful of students to that of a growing
vital program. She has spent hours revising the curriculum to make it relevant
to today’s public schools and appealing to future teachers. Students are excited
about the program as evidenced by the dramatic increase in the number of middle
grades majors and their involvement in professional organizations.”
Roukema is not only valued for her teaching in the
undergraduate and graduate programs, she is also sought after by local school
systems to provide faculty development workshops. She is known for her ability
to make content interesting and relevant. Roukema has also had several articles
published in educational journals. Her knowledge, expertise and overall
delightful persona make her a valued member of the professional education
faculty.
Dr. Roukema holds a B.A. and M.A. in Middle Grades
Education from UNC-Chapel Hill, an M.A. in Administration and Supervision from
UNC-Pembroke and an Ed.D in Educational Leadership from Fayetteville State
University.
