Hoyle receives the Dean’s Excellence in Teaching award
Dr. Lydia Huffman Hoyle, of Cary, N.C., received the 2007 Dean’s Excellence in
Teaching award for the Campbell University Divinity School. Hoyle is an
associate professor of Church History and Baptist Heritage.
“A distinguished theological educator and leader among
Baptists in the field of church history, Dr. Hoyle has endeared herself to
students and colleagues as a superb professor, wonderful colleague, and devoted
church leader,” said Dr. Michael Cogdill, dean of the Divinity School. “Students
in the Divinity School will quickly tell you of their appreciation for Dr.
Hoyle’s influence upon them to strive for excellence in their academic pursuits
as well as in their professional callings.”
A Bachelor of Science graduate of Appalachian State
University, Hoyle earned the Master of Divinity degree from Southwestern Baptist
Theological Seminary, and the Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees
from the University of North Carolina. Before coming to Campbell University
Divinity School, Hoyle served as associate professor of religion at Georgetown
College for thirteen years. In addition to preaching and leading Bible studies
at various churches, she was chosen to deliver a paper at the 2006 Young
Scholars in the Baptist Academy Seminar at Regent’s Park College, Oxford
University, England. She is the author of numerous publications and articles on
the history of women in the church, Baptist history and the history of missions.
“Dr. Lydia Hoyle is an excellent example of the quality
of professors at Campbell University. She has devoted her life to the training
and education of future Christian leaders in the church and community,” said
Cogdill.
In addition to teaching, Hoyle and her husband Rick, a
professor at Duke University, are the parents of three children and are active
in their local church.
