Campbell to offer summer science pharmacy camp
A nationally recognized program and academic outreach opportunities are making
Campbell University’s School of Pharmacy a sought after destination for high
school students and graduates this summer and throughout the year. SciPharm,
“The Science behind the Pharmacist,” summer day camp is being offered June 25-29
from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. on the Campbell University campus. The theme of this
years’ camp is “From the Field to the Pharmacy,” which introduces students to
the study of pharmaceutical sciences and pharmacy research and development
through hands-on lab activities, workshops and field trips.
According to Emily Bloom, associate director of
Education Outreach for the Campbell School of Pharmacy, SciPharm is just one of
the activities made possible through a Burroughs Wellcome Student Science
Enrichment Program grant and funding from the Campbell School of Pharmacy.
SciPharm is now in its fifth year.
“SciPharm is a great way for high school students
to come and experience a taste of what pharmacy can offer them as a career
option,” Bloom said. “We will be visiting Biogenldec in RTP this year and
learning about the career of Percy Julian, a groundbreaking black chemist who
started his work in the early part of the 20th century.”
SciPharm is open to any high school age student able to
get to the university each day. The cost is $10 per student. For more
information can be found on the Science Education Outreach Web site at SciPharm
at www.campbell.edu/faculty/ebloom or by calling Emily Bloom at 910.893.1842.
Only 20 students will be admitted to this year’s camp
and there are still a few remaining spaces.
