Buies Creek—Students
from
Campbell’s Lundy-Fetterman School of Business took first place honors in the
annual statewide Graduate Business Student Competition sponsored by the
North Carolina Small Business and Technology Development Center (SBTDC). The
winners were announced at a luncheon on May 16 on the Campbell campus.
MBA students Steven
Baldwin, Kenneth Britton, and Cynthia Gigandet worked with the
MarketPlace-Mail.com (MPM), a Raleigh-based direct mail service provider
owned and operated by Steven and Bracha Rosenberg, to improve growth and
create a “turn key” operation that could be replicated in other markets. The
clients are veterans of 20 years in the direct mail industry providing solo
direct mailings, bulk mailing services, internet advertising and a quarterly
direct mail booklet.
Using innovative techniques
such as situation analysis and surveys, the Campbell team discovered areas
in which MPM’s operations could be improved to realize higher profit
margins. They identified problem areas such as organizational structure and
customer satisfaction and made recommendations that would help the company
achieve its goals. The team provided a better picture of the client’s
advertising needs and suggested increased focus on the business core
competencies.
The team of Ryann Angle
Ciji Cress and Adam Deal won an Honorable Mention for their work with an
Erwin organization, People Achieving Life Skills, Inc. (PALS), serving
developmentally disabled adults.
“Not to my surprise, the
Campbell teams once again rose to the occasion and solidified their
prominent position in this statewide competition by receiving both the first
place and an honorable mention awards in the 20th Annual Graduate
Business Student Competition,” said Dr. Shahriar Mostashari, associate dean
of External Relations and faculty liaison. “We are very proud of them.”
Dr. Mike Seibert, assistant
state director of the SBTDC, said the Campbell students applied the
knowledge gained from their course work very effectively. “They were able to
identify critical issues and develop and implement recommendations which
proved to enhance the performance of the business,” he said. “The Graduate
Business Student Competition program provides an opportunity for students
like these to complete their educational experience by transferring
classroom learning into job performance. Well done Campbell!”
Campbell’s
School of Business has taken top honors a total of 16times out of the past
20 years of the Graduate Business Student Competition, wining five first
place awards, four second-place awards, three third-place awards and four
honorable mentions.
