Jackson honored at Campbell graduation exercises
Pharmacist Jimmy Smith Jackson, of Garner, N.C., received the Honorary Doctor of
Science degree from Campbell University at the school’s 121st graduation
exercises on Monday, May 14, for his contributions to his community and the
practice of pharmacy. Jackson currently serves as a member of the Pharmacy
Network National Corporation (PNNC) in which he played a founding role.
A 1967 graduate of the University of Mississippi School
of Pharmacy, Jackson began his career with Kerr Drug Stores, earning the rank of
vice president of Pharmacy and Government Affairs at the time of Kerr’s
acquisition by the J.C. Penney Company. While associated with J.C. Penney,
Jackson was active in the Pharmacy Benefit Management Company’s TDI Managed Care
program and helped found the PNNC, which provides financial support to the
retail pharmacy related activities of schools of pharmacy.
When the J.C. Penney Company purchased the Eckerd
Corporation, Jackson served as vice president of Pharmacy Affairs and Government
for Eckerd, working closely with boards of pharmacy, legislatures and school of
pharmacy throughout the Southeast.
Jackson was also active in state and national affairs,
serving as president of the North Carolina Pharmaceutical Association and chair
of the State Government Affairs Committee for the National Association of Chain
Drug Stores. As a lobbyist, Jackson was instrumental in the passage of
legislation benefiting both the public and the pharmacy profession. He played a
key role in the passage of licensure by endorsement legislation in Florida, the
Uniform prescription Drug Card in North Carolina, Virginia and Georgia and
Medicaid fee preservation in many of the states in which he has been involved.
