Wiggins named “Outstanding
Educator” by the Association of Southern Baptist Colleges and Schools
Bob Agee, executive director of the Association of Southern Baptist Colleges and
Schools (ASBCS), presented the Charles D. Johnson Outstanding Educator Award to
Campbell Chancellor Norman A. Wiggins. Wiggins was honored at the annual faculty
orientation worship service where Agee delivered the devotional on the
theological framework of Christian higher education.
“This is the most prestigious award given to a Baptist educator,” said Agee. “It
isn’t even given out annually, but is awarded to a person who has made
outstanding contributions to Christian education.”
The purpose of the Association of Southern Baptist
Colleges and Schools is to serve and promote its member schools through the Web
site, printed materials and ongoing services and programs. The ASBCS has 53
member schools, including Belmont, Carson-Newman, Blue Mountain, Hardin-Simmons,
Howard Payne, Chowan and Baylor.
Dr. Norman A. Wiggins served as president of Campbell
University for 36 years. He resigned in 2003 to become university chancellor
leaving a legacy of lasting accomplishments. During Wiggins’ presidency,
Campbell received university status; the nationally recognized ROTC program was
developed; the off-campus satellite program, which now includes campuses at Fort
Bragg, Research Triangle Park, Camp Lejeune and Tunku Abdul Rahman College in
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, was established; the schools of Law, Business, Pharmacy,
Education and Divinity were founded; and the Divinity School, which opened in
1996, added a Doctor of Ministry program.
In 1984, Wiggins was elected president of the Baptist
State Convention of North Carolina. He was re-elected in 1986, one of only two
college presidents in 160 years to fill this position.
“This is a very historic moment in the life of Campbell
University,” said President Jerry M. Wallace. “Dr. Wiggins is truly a Baptist
statesman. Campbell is honored to have Dr. Wiggins receive this award.”
