Campbell’s new residence hall
almost ready to open
Over 2,000 yards of concrete and seven miles of copper wiring were required to
build Campbell’s newest residence hall, located on Leslie Campbell Avenue near
the west entrance of the campus. Although it has yet to be named, the new
building is almost ready to open its doors to students.
The 302-bed, $15-million building features four-bedroom
suites and apartments with kitchens or kitchenettes and fully-furnished living
areas. “We’re very close to completion,” said Dale McCoy, project superintendent
for contractor, T.A. Loving Company, of Goldsboro, N.C. “The building has many
great features, but I think the best is the commons area between the north and
south towers. It provides a place for students to hang out and relax.”
Designed by Little Diversified Architectural Consulting
firm, the residence hall has traditional architectural styling with a shingle
roof and brick construction. The 2,000 square-foot commons area contains a
fireplace, sink, cabinets, sofas, chairs and game tables, as well as
wall-to-wall carpeting. The new residence hall contains a total of 75
four-bedroom apartments and suites, each with an interior door; central air and
heat; and fire alarm, security and sprinkler systems.
The units are either equipped with a full kitchen,
featuring standard appliances, or a kitchenette with sink, small refrigerator
and microwave oven. The 106,000 square-foot residence hall also features a
350-space parking area. Only juniors and seniors are eligible to live in the
apartments, while sophomores, juniors and seniors may live in the suites. Only a
few vacancies remain. Architects have made provision for a future addition at
the west end of the new structure to accommodate enrollment increases.
Campbell’s new residence hall is part of a
comprehensive campus master plan designed to expand instructional facilities and
student residences to accommodate increased enrollment. The centerpiece of the
plan is the John W. Pope Jr. Convocation Center project, a $30 million, 140,000
square-foot sports and cultural arena projected to break ground in 2006.
Construction has already begun on a new pharmacy instructional facility designed
to double the current space.
