Cumberland County educator named
assistant vice president for Advancement
Jerry Wood, of Fayetteville, N.C, who retired from the Cumberland County Schools
System after a career spanning 30 years, has been named Campbell University’s
assistant vice president for Institutional Advancement. Prior to his
appointment, Wood served as assistant vice president for Church and Community
Relations at Campbell.
A graduate of Methodist College, Wood earned a Bachelor
of Science degree in chemistry in 1964. He went on to receive a master’s degree
in education and an Educational Specialist degree in Public
School Administration from East Carolina University.
Wood began his professional career as a teacher at
Seventy-First Senior High School in 1964. He went on to serve in numerous school
administrative positions in Cumberland County, including coordinator of Adult
Education at Fayetteville Technical Institute, assistant principal at
Seventy-First High School, director of Support Services for the Cumberland
County School System and assistant superintendent for Ancillary Services,
associate superintendent of Facilities Management, Planning and Public Affairs,
associate superintendent of Operations and interim superintendent for the
Cumberland County Schools. He came to Campbell University in 1993.
Active in a number of professional organizations, Wood
served on the North Carolina Association of School Administrators Board of
Directors (superintendents’ representative for Region IV) and is a life member
of the North Carolina Association of Educators. Wood has also been a member of
the American Association of School Administrators, the Association of School
Business Officials and the Council for Education Facility Planners, among
others. In addition, he has served as a member of the board of directors and the
Government Affairs Committee for the Dunn Area Chamber of Commerce, as chairman
of the Advisory Board of the State Employees Credit Union, as a member of the
Division of Insurance Advisory Board, the State Board of Education and the
Fayetteville Area Chamber of Commerce Military Affairs Committee.
In 1988, he was named Administrator of the Year by the
North Carolina Association of Education Office Professionals. He also received
the Educator of the Year award from the Cape Fear chapter of the Jaycees. In
addition, Wood has been a guest lecturer at East Carolina University.

Relations, Jerry Wood has made significant contributions to the mission of
Campbell University,” said Dr. Jack Britt, vice president for Advancement. “I
know his tireless work ethic and dedication will continue to advance the
university in his new role.”
Wood and his wife, Jane, are members of Snyder Memorial
Baptist Church in Fayetteville, where his duties have included serving as a
deacon, trustee for the endowment funds, member of the Finance Committee and the
Committee on Committees and as an usher. The Woods are the parents of three
sons, Jerry Wood, Jr., Jeffrey Wood, and James Wood. They have six
grandchildren.
