Davis, Lawrence celebrate long tenure at
Campbell
Marjorie Davis, of the Accounting Office, and Peggy Lawrence, of Career
Development and Placement, remember the day when they didn’t even have a job
title at Campbell College.
“Back then, everybody could do everybody else’s job,”
said Lawrence, who came to Campbell in 1960.
Davis and Lawrence were among 61 employees who were honored at the university’s
annual Years of Service Awards held recently.
“We all have a common thread and that is Campbell
University,” said Jim Roberts, vice president for Business and treasurer. “We
all work together to create a vital environment to help Campbell students
succeed.”
Campbell President Dr. Jerry Wallace, who was also
honored at the awards service, commended the honorees for their dedication.
“What a wonderful testimony to have served at Campbell and made a difference,”
Wallace said. “That’s what we market here. Everything that we do is for the
purpose of bringing persons here who, when they graduate, will go out into the
world and be the salt of the earth and the light of the world.”
A veteran of 50 years at Campbell, Marjorie Davis
attended the first grade at Buies Creek Academy. She became a Campbell employee
in 1955, working in the Business Office for the late Lonnie Small. “I remember
the work philosophy of Mr. Small and President Leslie Campbell,” Davis said.
“Work hard, enjoy your work and be proud. I’m proud to have been a part of
Campbell University for so many years.”
Lawrence, who worked with the late Robert King to
establish Campbell’s first Guidance and Career Counseling Office in 1975, was on
the ground floor of a service that would become an integral part of the
educational experience at Campbell.
Today Lawrence, who works exclusively for the Lundy-Fetterman
School of Business as a career advisor, says her office places approximately 95
percent of its student clients. “We don’t let them go until we know they are
employed or going on for another degree,” she said. “There’s nothing as exciting
as being a part of the lives of young people.”
