Civic leader elected to Campbell
board
Teddy Byrd, of Coats, N.C., has been elected to Campbell University’s
Presidential Board of Advisors. Byrd, who is the chairman of the Harnett County
Board of Commissioners, is the president and CEO of the Teddy J. Byrd Agency
Inc., Nationwide Insurance agencies in Coats, Angier and Erwin.
A graduate of Campbell University, Byrd received a
bachelor’s degree in social science in 1985. He participated in Campbell’s ROTC
program and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army in 1983.
Byrd, who is a lieutenant colonel in the Army Reserves, recently returned from a
tour of duty in Iraq, where he served as a logistics adviser to the
multinational division, training Iraqi soldiers, establishing logistics bases,
supervising convoy support units and managing supplies. He was awarded the
Bronze Star for meritorious service in Operation Iraqi Freedom and has recently
been selected to command an Army Reserve battalion.
Byrd was elected to the Harnett County Board of Commissioners in 1996 and
elected chairman of the board in 2000. He was reelected chairman while serving
in Iraq and again elected chairman in 2004.
He is a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and
the founding president of the Coats Jaycees. Byrd is also a member of the
American Legion, the Angier Rotary Club (Paul Harris Fellow) and the Coats
Chamber of Commerce (past president). In addition, he serves on the Harnett
Forward Together Committee, the board of directors of the Harnett County
Department of Social Services, the board of directors of the Harnett County
Department of Health, the Harnett County Aging Advisory Council and First
Citizens Bank.
A longtime supporter of Campbell University, Byrd
served as president of the 2005 Harnett County Loyalty Campaign. He and his
wife, Shelia, are members of Coats Baptist Church, where he has served as a
deacon and Sunday school class president. They are the parents of three
children: Samantha, Alexandra and Zachary.
