Pharmacy building to anchor
future science and health care programs
The Campbell University School of Pharmacy broke ground Tuesday on a new, $9.9
million pharmacy teaching facility, the beginning of a thrust to add new science
and health care academic programs at Campbell.
“This groundbreaking ceremony is about the leadership
and incentive the School of Pharmacy and this building will provide today and in
the future,” said Campbell President Jerry M. Wallace. “This new building will
anchor buildings to come, it will be the cornerstone of a block of science and
health care education at Campbell.”
After the 42,000 square-foot pharmacy teaching facility
is completed in August 2006, the university’s first priority is to construct
more undergraduate laboratory space, Wallace said. This will be followed by the
addition of new science and healthcare academic programs, some of which are
already under consideration.
“One day you will see a complex of science buildings
that will reach from here to the McLeod Athletic Training Facility,” Wallace
said. The best is yet to be.”
Architect Robert Bishop outlined the four objectives of architectural firm
Little and Associates in designing the building.
“We designed this building to provide a quality
learning environment, cutting-edge laboratory space, a showcase for Campbell
University and the School of Pharmacy and architectural compatibility with
existing buildings on campus,” Bishop said. “Fourteen months from now when this
building opens, we think you’ll see that we achieved these goals.”
The teaching facility will contain three floors with
classrooms, breakout rooms, admissions and alumni suites, lecture halls,
offices, a faculty resource center and professional association room and over
5,000 square-feet of laboratory space.
Keynote speaker, Mitchell Watts, president of The Pharmacy Network Foundation
called the groundbreaking a wonderful occasion. “The entrepreneurial spirit of
retail pharmacy in North Carolina and the vision of the Pharmacy Network of
North Carolina board made it possible for the Foundation to be here today and
support Campbell University with this great expansion project.” Watts said. “We
must never forget the benefits an entrepreneurial spirit can accomplish when we
co-create with the Divine.”
The Pharmacy Network Foundation pledged $1.4 million
toward the construction of the new teaching facility.
Dr. Ronald Maddox, dean of the School of Pharmacy,
referred to the groundbreaking as a special event in Campbell’s history.
“We’re very excited about the new facility and what it means
to students,” Maddox said. “It will enhance the educational process here to
continue to move the school forward. We need to have the best facilities
available and these will be the best facilities.”
Others who spoke at the event were Harold Wells, chairman of the Campbell
University Board of Trustees, and Campbell trustee, Raymond A. Bryan, Jr.,
chairman of the board of directors of the T.A. Loving Construction Company,
contractor for the pharmacy teaching facility.
The Campbell University School of Pharmacy is a member
of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy. The school’s mission is to
train clinical pharmacists in a Christian environment to meet existing and
future healthcare needs and to guide students to become well-adjusted, exemplary
citizens and community leaders. The school maintains an overall passage rate of
99 percent on state and national board exams. In 2001, Campbell dedicated the
$3.2 million Pharmacy Research Facility designed to integrate clinical research
and pharmaceutical sciences programs with industry demands.
