Campbell Graduates 1,500 at Malaysian Campus

Campbell University graduated 1,500 students at commencement exercises held Saturday, June 19, on its Malaysian campus at Tunku Abdul Rahman College (TARC) in Kuala Lumpur.

“This is the largest graduating class in the history of the TARC program,” said Dr. Dwaine Greene, vice president for Academic Affairs and provost at Campbell. “It was a wonderful event.”

The graduates, all of whom received Bachelor of Science degrees, will work primarily in the Pacific Rim with technology companies such as Microsoft and Motorola, Greene said.

Tunku Abdul Rahman College was established in 1969 under the leadership of the Malaysian Chinese Association. Although a private school, it is also supported by the Malaysian government. The college was named for the late Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, the first prime minister of Malaysia. He led the country to independence from Great Britain in 1963.

The association between Campbell and Tunku Abdul Rahman College began in 1979 with TARC graduating 15 students in 1981, all of whom received Bachelor of Science degrees. Since that time the number of graduates has increased 100-fold, said Greene. The program is part of a cooperative effort between Campbell, the University of Ulster in Belfast, Northern Ireland (formerly called Ulster Polytechnic College of Northern Ireland, and Tunku Abdul Rahman College.

Today, TARC offers degree programs in computer science, microelectronics, chemistry and biology, information systems engineering, and business information systems.

From an initial intake of 764 students with classes conducted in various centers in the Klang Valley in 1969, the college today includes a main campus and five branch campuses in Penang, Perak, Johor, and Pahang.

“We continue to enjoy a sterling relationship with Tunku Abdul Rahman College, and we are proud of our graduates,” said Greene.
