Orientation Confirms Smith’s Expectations

Incoming freshman Heather Smith

Dr. Jerry Wallace welcomed students to the second New Student Orientation held at Campbell University, Friday and Saturday, July 9-10. He spoke to the approximately 1,000 students and their parents gathered under the ancient oak trees on the Carrie Rich Memorial Library Mall in front of historic Kivett Hall.

“Buies Creek is a very unique place because it is located on a special plot of geography,” Wallace said. “This is a holy place. This university was founded where you’re sitting. Our founders prayed, sang hymns, and then went to work building the first building on campus. The same spirit has permeated Campbell University throughout its 118-year history.”

That spirit drew incoming freshman Heather Smith to Campbell in the first place, she admitted. “It was the atmosphere,” said the 18-year-old from McLeansville, NC. “It just felt right.”

Smith, who graduated from Northeast High School, was very involved in her school and her community. She was a member of Junior Civitans, the Beta Club, French Club, and the National Honor Society. She played tennis, earning a place on the varsity team, and is a member of the McLeansville Baptist Church youth group and the choir. Her educational choice was based on the fact that, in addition to academic opportunities, Campbell felt more like her own hometown, she explained.

“Campbell has a more relaxed feeling. It’s away from the rush of the city,” she said. “I like that.”

Wallace noted that in spite of its “village setting” Buies Creek is in the center of an area that includes larger cities such as Fayetteville, Raleigh, and Goldsboro, and it stands ready to meet the demands of the future.

“This institution is 118 years old, but it is new to the needs of the students and very open to the newness of challenges,” he added.

Those challenges include a long-range growth plan with projects such as a convocation center that will feature athletic and recreational space and serve as a multi-functional complex for educational and recreational opportunities, as well as many other new facilities.

Meanwhile Smith and the rest of the students in attendance seemed anxious to get started in the fall. “I’m a pre-pharmacy major,” Smith said. “That’s subject to change, but it is the goal I’m aiming for right now.”

The New Student Orientation featured entertainment, educational sessions, schedule advisement, and a chance to pre-register for fall classes.

Founded in 1887, Campbell University is North Carolina’s second largest private institution of higher education and the second largest Baptist university in the world. Located in Buies Creek, NC, just east of the center of the state, Campbell combines academic excellence and Christian commitment.
