Campbell Alumnus had Good Role Models

Hampton Baldwin

As soon as his security clearance is complete, Charles Luke Baldwin (’02) will be leaving his home in Greenville, SC, to move to Washington, DC, and begin a job with the Department of Defense. Baldwin, who graduated from Campbell with a bachelor’s degree in international business, is eager to put his educational training into practice.

“I feel strongly that the United States is on the right course in Iraq,” Baldwin said. “I wanted to jump in and serve the troops.”

The son of Maj. Gen. Charles Baldwin, chief of Chaplain Service for the U.S. Air Force, and the great, great nephew of Hampton Baldwin, the Campbell benefactor for whom Baldwin Hall is named, Luke has had some superb role models.

Hampton Baldwin was a retired farmer from the Whiteville, NC, area when he came to Buies Creek to visit Campbell for the first time. Having lost a son just as he came of high school age, Hampton and his wife, Elizabeth, were so impressed with the school and its mission they decided to assist Campbell in its work to produce future generations of leaders and educators. The board of trustees named Baldwin Hall in honor of the Hampton Baldwin family upon the building’s completion in 1964.

Luke Baldwin’s grandfather, Conrad Baldwin, is yet another role model in the Baldwin family. Conrad Baldwin attended Campbell College in the mid 1930s. He graduated from Wake Forest University and received a Master of Divinity degree from Yale University. He also served in the chaplaincy during World War II.

“My father, grandfather, and uncle probably have a lot to do with my decision to serve,” Luke said. “I feel so strongly about what our leaders are calling us to do that I want to be a part of it. I think now is the time for our generation to step up and serve the country.”

As a Campbell undergraduate, Luke Baldwin was president of Campus Crusade for Christ from 1999-2002 and helped to expand the organization from 20 members to over 400. He was a resident assistant at Burkot Hall and served as manager of the Oasis Grill and the Oasis Deli after graduation.

Founded in 1887, Campbell University is North Carolina’s second largest private institution of higher education and the second largest Baptist university in the world. Located in Buies Creek, NC, just east of the center of the state, Campbell combines academic excellence and Christian commitment.
