Dr. James Martin

Dr. James Martin, chair of the Department of Government, History, and Justice at Campbell University, has been awarded a Director’s Fellowship by the Jacob Rader Marcus Center of the American Jewish Archives in Cincinnati, OH.

Dr. Martin plans to use the fellowship to spend two weeks at the archives researching the letters of Dr. Sidney Unger, a prominent Asheville, NC, rabbi. As a recipient of the fellowship, he will also be expected to give a 30-minute presentation concerning the findings of his research.

A cum laude graduate of Duke University, Martin received a Master of Arts degree from East Carolina University in Greenville, NC, and a Ph.D. from Emory University in 1990. Before coming to Campbell in 1991, Martin was employed as a social studies teacher and coach at James Kenan High School in Warsaw, NC. He also served as an adjunct professor at Mount Olive College and Sampson Community College.

In addition to western civilization, Martin has taught courses on East Asia, Eastern Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, modern Germany, South Asia, and Southeast Asia. He has also taught a social studies methods course.

A scholar of North Carolina’s Jewish population, Martin has made presentations to the North Carolina Association of Historians Meeting at the University of North Carolina at Asheville and the Edgecombe County Memorial Library in Tarboro, NC, among others. He is a past president of the Association of Historians in North Carolina and attended the Carolinas Regional Phi Alpha Theta Conference at Coastal Carolina University where he served as a paper judge.
