Peeler and Worrell Win Communications Awards

Joanna Worrell and Jodi Peeler

Jodi Peeler and Joanna Worrell were recently honored by the Raleigh Public Relations Society at the organization’s annual banquet to recognize winners of the Sir Walter Raleigh Awards for Excellence in Communication.  Peeler, associate director of Alumni Affairs and Outcome Assessment in the School of Pharmacy, won a Gold Award in the Publications Division, Annual Report Category. Worrell, publications manager in the Office of Public Information, received an Honorable Mention in the Public Relations Writing, Opinion/Feature Writing Category.

Peeler was honored for her work on the 2002-2003 School of Pharmacy Annual Report, which not only captured the events and progress of the school, but provided an avenue to highlight student honorees, alumni activities, community service, research projects, and faculty accomplishments.

As associate director of Alumni Affairs and Outcome Assessment, Peeler plans alumni events—including regional dinners, alumni retreats and the annual golf tournament—and maintains the alumni web page, writes the newsletter, and establishes alumni fundraising campaigns. Currently, she is a student in the MBA program at Campbell University and serves as the president of the N.C. State communications department Alumni Circle Board of Advisors. A native of Lincolnton, NC, she graduated cum laude from N.C. State University with a B.A. in communication and a minor in business management.

Worrell received an honorable mention for the feature article “The Freshman Perspective: Meet the Class of 2007,” which shared the first-year college experiences of a group of freshmen.

As publications manager, Worrell oversees the publication of The Campbell Prospect, the alumni tabloid publication of the University, in addition to writing news releases and feature stories. Last year, she won a Best in Division Sir Walter Raleigh Award for a news release about Campbell professor Dr. Elizabeth Rambo.

A native of Wilson, NC, she is a 2001 summa cum laude graduate of Campbell, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. She was recently accepted into the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she plans to enroll in full-time graduate study in the fall.

Entries were judged by the Sacramento, CA, Public Relations Association based on objectives, method, results, creativity, and overall quality using a 100-point scale. Best in Division, Gold, Silver and Honorable Mention Awards were presented. For more information, see www.rprs.org.

The Raleigh Public Relations Society, formed in 1959, is an organization for public relations professionals in the Raleigh area. RPRS hosts professional development opportunities including monthly meetings and an annual awards banquet.
