Anderson Receives Award from Trial Lawyers Association

Thomas Anderson

Thomas P. Anderson, a professor at Campbell University’s Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law, has received the Charles L. Becton Award for Outstanding Teaching in Trial Advocacy. The award was given by the North Carolina Academy of Trial Lawyers at their annual convention in Sunset Beach, NC. Before becoming a professor at Campbell, Anderson was a practicing attorney in Birmingham, AL and the administrative assistant to the mayor of Birmingham.

Anderson said, “I am honored to be recognized by the Academy. I believe that this award is recognition not only of my teaching, but an award for the entire faculty that teach in the nationally recognized Trial Advocacy program at Campbell University’s Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law.”

Professor Anderson received his B.A. from the University of Alabama and graduated cum laude from Cumberland School of Law where he was a member of the Cumberland Law Review. He was a Freedman Fellow at Temple University School of Law and received his LL.M. there.

Anderson is a graduate of the National Institute for Trial Advocacy and has taught in CLE programs in Philadelphia and for the North Carolina Academy of Trial Lawyers. He teaches in the Trial and Appellate Advocacy program, works with the trial teams and teaches Civil Procedure and Pretrial Litigation.

The award was named after Charles L. Becton, a Raleigh lawyer who teaches at the UNC and Duke University law schools. Becton is a former president of the Academy and of the NC Association of Black Lawyers. He served on the NC Court of Appeals from 1981-1990.

The Academy has more than 4,000 members working to protect the rights of individuals. It provides continuing legal education for lawyers, public education programs such as the Wade Edwards High School Mock Trial Competition, amicus briefs for the appellate courts, and legislative work in criminal and civil justice areas. The Academy has served its members and North Carolina for over 40 years.

Founded in 1976, the Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law has an enrollment of over 300 students and enjoys a heritage derived from three distinct traditions—the noble tradition of the legal profession, the Christian tradition, and the finer traditions of the rural South, such as friendliness and self-reliance. It strives to educate lawyers who are prepared to serve their communities with legal skills and ethical and intellectual leadership.
