Professors Participate in Elite Program at Georgetown College

Dr. Adam English

Drs. Kathy Lopez and Adam English, professors in the Department of Religion and Philosophy, were chosen to participate in a special program with an elite group of junior faculty from Baptist colleges and universities to explore the promise and perils of Baptist higher education. The program was sponsored by Georgetown College, Georgetown, KY, and Baylor University, Waco, TX, and was funded by grant from the Lilly Endowment. The young scholars convened at Georgetown College from June 9-13.

The seminar addressed questions regarding the distinctive nature of “Christian” higher education and explored the contributions that Baptists can make to the enterprise. The seminar probed the personal levels of what it might mean to be a scholar in the Baptist tradition and examined ways that one might integrate one’s faith into teaching.

English said, “I have always seen teaching as a calling, but this seminar helped me to reflect on the calling of the Christian university to higher education and to faithful witness. In other words, by joining the faculty, I not only began to fulfill my calling to teach, but I also joined the larger vision and mission of Campbell University.”

Founded in 1887, Campbell University is North Carolina’s second largest private institution of higher education and the second largest Baptist university in the world. Located in Buies Creek, NC, just east of the center of the state, Campbell combines academic excellence and Christian commitment.
