Drug Information Center Plays Role in Recent G8 Summit

The Campbell University School of Pharmacy’s Drug Information Center recently provided 24-hour drug information support for the G8 Summit held at Sea Island, GA, on June 8-10, 2004.

According to Dr. Connie Barnes, director of the Drug Information Center, the services of the center were requested because of the need for current information about medications manufactured and marketed in foreign countries.

“I was pleased that the Campbell University School of Pharmacy’s Drug Information Center was selected to provide drug information coverage for the G8 Summit,” said Dr. Ronald Maddox, dean of the School of Pharmacy. “To be selected to provide this critical service to the individuals in attendance at this meeting was an honor for the university and School of Pharmacy.”

The Group of Eight (G8) Summit is a meeting of the leaders of eight major industrial nations: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom and United States. The group meets annually to deal with economic, political, social, and security issues facing the world. The United States, as president of the group this year, was responsible for hosting and planning the event. Topics on the agenda at the recent G8 Summit meeting included the status of the global economy, reforms in the Middle East, global security, Iraq, and development in Africa—specifically promoting economic development and fighting HIV/AIDS through vaccine development.

Campbell’s Drug Information Center was founded in 1987 and is located in Carrie Rich Memorial Library on the Campbell campus. The Drug Information Center serves the health professions community by answering drug-related questions, provides a learning center for pharmacy students in drug information skills, and aids in the promotion of the pharmacy school by offering drug information services to healthcare practitioners throughout the state.
