McNeill Celebrates 45 Years and Counting

Dining Services employee Bertha McNeill, of Erwin, NC, recently celebrated 45 years at Campbell University, and she is in no mood to retire.

“I don’t plan to retire completely anytime soon,” she said. “I like to work. It pacifies your mind, and makes you feel better. Working gives you something to think about, and the people that you work with become your family.”

McNeill first came to Campbell in 1959 as an interim employee, filling in for another worker who was ill. McNeill was asked to stay on and began working as a baker in Dining Services, where she has been ever since.

“I love baking. I’ve done it so long, I feel like it’s just something that I should do,” she said.

She also believes a person should work as long as he or she has good health and the strength to do a good job. “Campbell is just like home,” she said. “If I stayed at home all day, I would be missing the people that I work with.”

Recently, McNeill was recognized for her service by university president Dr. Jerry M. Wallace, who referred to her as one of Campbell’s greatest assets.

“We appreciate your many years of hard work and dedication to Campbell,” he said. “You have made a great contribution to the university.”

McNeill is a member of Green Shepherd Free Will Baptist Church near Lillington, where she serves as a Sunday school teacher and a church mother. She and her husband, the late Ned McNeill, are the parents of a son, Jimmy Lee McNeill. Ned McNeill worked in Campbell’s Dining Services department for 20 years.
