Sisters Share More than Resemblance

It is said that siblings have a kind of radar. They almost think each other’s thoughts and feel each other’s feelings. But with Angela, Sandra, and Sonja Gambrell, the similarity goes deeper than that.

Students at Campbell University, the sisters not only share a love of art and a talent for painting, but a desire to attend a college where values shape the environment.

Before transferring to Campbell in 2003, Angela, a rising junior majoring in graphic design, attended a community college.

“There was a lot of foul language and some areas that were even dangerous to walk through on campus,” she said. “My sisters and I have been Christians all of our lives, and we all decided we wanted to go to a Christian university.”

Children of a military family, the Gambrells lived in Germany, Japan, and Goldsboro, NC, among other places. They were home-schooled, and Angela and Sandra, a rising junior majoring in Studio Art, attended secular schools before transferring to Campbell. Sonja, a rising sophomore majoring in Theatre Arts, learned a lesson from her big sisters.

“Sonja saw what a difference it made when Sandra and I transferred to a Christian school,” said Angela. “She said right from the beginning, ‘I’m not going to a secular school, I’m going to Campbell.’”

Recently the sisters were invited to submit pieces of their artwork to be featured in a silent auction at North Carolina’s upcoming Education Ball, a fundraising event benefiting the state’s Communities in Schools organization. Communities in Schools, a nonprofit representing both public and private schools, advocates for children, youth, and families across the state.

Angela’s piece, “Thy Word is …. A Light Unto My Path,” is an acrylic painting of an open Bible enveloped in a bright, glowing light. It symbolizes her feelings about the importance of God’s guidance in all aspects of life, including education.

“In my painting I tried to illustrate the power of God’s love through his word,” Angela said, “and how he guides us to make the right decisions whenever we seek him.”

Angela, Sandra, and Sonja are the daughters of Vernon and Julie Gambrell, of Lillington, NC. They also have a fourth sister, Amie McKinney. The Gambrells have earned several scholarships at Campbell, including the Presidential and Scott-Ellis scholarships.

Founded in 1887, Campbell University is North Carolina’s second largest private institution of higher education and the second largest Baptist university in the world. Located in Buies Creek, NC, just east of the center of the state, Campbell combines academic excellence and Christian commitment.
