Sawyer Retires After 38 Years at Campbell

Billie Sawyer

When Billie Sawyer first came to Campbell in 1966, Dr. Norman A. Wiggins was a freshman college president and the schools of pharmacy and law were only distant goals. Sawyer retired in May after 38 years in Campbell’s Food Services Department. She was assistant manager of Dining Services.

A native of Erwin, NC, Sawyer began her career at Campbell in Salads and Desserts. Her responsibilities included making approximately 1,300 individual salads a day and serving lunch. As she gained more experience, Sawyer’s responsibilities changed to include assistant manager of Shouse Dining Hall, managing workers, and coordinating the scheduling of special events.

“I just did whatever needed to be done,” Sawyer said pragmatically. “But we always had a good time when we worked, and I’m going to miss all of the friends I’ve made at Campbell. I count everybody here as a friend.”

Married to retired farmer H.A. Sawyer, the couple has four children: Debbie Cook, Kathy Bryant, Ty Sawyer, Jeff Sawyer, and Lisa Hierman. The Sawyers also have eight grandchildren.

Sawyer’s plans for retirement include very little planning. “This is the first time in my life that I’ve been free to get up and do what I’ve wanted to do,” she said. “It feels pretty good.”

Founded in 1887, Campbell University is North Carolina’s second largest private institution of higher education and the second largest Baptist university in the world. Located in Buies Creek, NC, just east of the center of the state, Campbell combines academic excellence and Christian commitment.
