Approximately 260 pastors and their guests attended Campbell University’s Board of Ministers and Pastors' School, which began Monday, June 7. Monday evening’s banquet and opening day were marked by several notable events.

At the banquet on Monday, Ronald S. Cava and G. Jeffery Roberts were named Reavis Scholars for 2004 and James C. Fowler received the 2004 Distinguished Service Award from the Campbell University Divinity School. Cava is pastor of First Baptist Church of Clinton, NC, and Roberts is pastor of Trinity Baptist Church in Raleigh, NC. Fowler is missions coordinator for the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship of North Carolina.

A gift of the late L.B. and Mabel Reavis, the Reavis Professorship and Scholarship Program funds the work of distinguished scholars in the fields of evangelism and Church Growth to teach in university programs. In addition, selected ministers whose ministry exemplifies excellence in these areas receive scholarships for continuing education in these fields. Phillip E. Thompson, assistant professor of Systematic Theology and Christian Heritage at North American Baptist Seminary in Sioux Falls, SD, was introduced as the 2004 Reavis Professor. Cava, Roberts, and Thompson were lauded for their dedication and service to Baptist life.

“Born on a mission field, Jim C. Fowler discovered early that God had planted in his heart a love for missions,” said Dr. Michael Cogdill, dean of the Campbell Divinity School. Cogdill presented the school’s Distinguished Service Award to Fowler, whom he added is the true embodiment of the scripture, “Go ye into all the world and preach the gospel to the whole creation (Mark 16:15).”

Earlier in the day, three members of the Campbell University Board of Ministers were recognized for their outstanding student recruitment efforts for Campbell: the Reverend Norman Aycock, associate pastor of Brookwood Baptist Church in Jacksonville, NC; the Reverend Mark Morris, pastor of Lillington Baptist Church in Lillington, NC; and the Reverend Calvin “Robbie” Parker, Jr., pastor of Williamston Memorial Baptist Church in Williamston, NC.

“These members were saluted for their many years of faithful service in referring and recruiting students to Campbell University,” said Jerry Wood, Campbell’s assistant vice president for Church and Community Relations. “What a great gift it is to introduce students to an educational environment that teaches them to ‘make a life and not just a living.’”

Wood also introduced the banquet’s keynote speaker, Campbell President Dr. Jerry M. Wallace, who explained the importance of the Board of Ministers and Pastors School to the university.

“Your presence here and the commitment you have to the university is the latest testament to the cry made by one of Campbell’s founding fathers, Z.T. Kivett,” Wallace said. “‘Buies Creek must live,’ said Kivett after a fire destroyed Buies Creek Academy in 1900. Buies Creek must live and so must Campbell,” Wallace added.

“We need your good will, and we need you to stand tall for Campbell on any floor, in any assembly in which Campbell is challenged.”

Campbell’s Board of Ministers elected 11 new members in 2004. They are the Reverend Donald Joseph Christian, pastor of First Baptist Church in Richlands, NC; the Reverend Don English, pastor of Center Hill Baptist Church in Tyner, NC; the Reverend Joy L. Heaton, pastor of Antioch Baptist Church in Enfield, NC; Dr. Phillip Hunter, pastor of Madison Avenue Baptist Church in Goldsboro, NC; the Reverend Harvey Michael Johnson, pastor of Rowland First Baptist Church in Rowland, NC; the Reverend Kenneth Carl McNeill, pastor of Hertford Baptist Church in Hertford, NC; the Reverend Patrick Pearce, associate pastor of First Baptist Church in Hickory, NC; the Reverend Donald Pegg Jr., pastor of Kinnett Memorial Baptist Church in Burlington, NC; Dr. Robert L.
