Campbell Hosts Mid-State Safety Council Workshop

A total of 52 people attended a workshop on safety held at Campbell University Wednesday, June 2. The workshop was sponsored by the Mid-State Safety Council, one of eight divisions of the North Carolina Industrial Commission Safety Department, which plans and presents programs to help industry achieve a safer environment. Herman Tyson, assistant manager for network and telecommunications at Campbell, serves as chairman of the council.

“Unlike OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration), the state’s Industrial Commission doesn’t levy fines against industries that aren’t practicing proper safety behaviors,” Tyson said. “It tries to teach people how to work safely and use appropriate caution in order to keep worker’s compensation claims down and provide a safer work environment.”

The workshop consisted of four training sessions dealing with four different safety issues, Tyson added. They included Forklift training, Hazardous Communication (hazardous chemicals), Electrical Safety, and Lockout/Tagout training which teaches operators how to render a piece of equipment safe for repair by shutting down all of its energy sources.

“The workshops weren’t just for Campbell employees but other industries as well,” said Tyson. Industries such as Colonial Carton Company, Airmakers HBAC, a manufacturer of air conditioning units, and Honeywell, Inc., were represented at the workshop.

The Mid-State Safety Council includes 14 counties, including Johnston and Harnett in the South and Franklin and Granville counties in the North. Council programs are held in March, June, September, and December and are enhanced by speakers who share their experiences and successes in safety-related issues. Meetings are not only educational, but provide opportunities to network with other individuals who have a professional interest in safety.

A Campbell employee for 20 years, Tyson also serves as Physical Plant safety officer. He is a volunteer firefighter and certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) with the Buies Creek Fire Department and is a member of the Fire Department’s board of directors, serving as treasurer.

“I was really pleased with the workshop,” Tyson said. “The instruction was informative and something we all need. It was a refresher course for some and a good training session for the new people, and that’s a good thing.”

Founded in 1887, Campbell University is North Carolina’s second largest private institution of higher education and the second largest Baptist university in the world. Located in Buies Creek, NC, just east of the center of the state, Campbell combines academic excellence and Christian commitment.
