Whichard Honored by University of North Carolina

Willis Whichard

Willis P. Whichard, dean of Campbell University’s Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law, was honored recently by the General Alumni Association of the University of North Carolina (UNC). Whichard was one of five recipients of the Distinguished Service Medal, an award recognizing those who have given time and service to UNC.

“It is, of course, a distinct honor to be recognized in this way, but any service any of us can render to our alma mater is a privilege,” Whichard said.

A 1962 graduate of UNC, Whichard earned his law degree from the university in 1965. He has been an advocate for UNC throughout his distinguished career as an attorney, legislator, and sitting judge on the state’s highest courts. He is the only North Carolinian in the history of the state to serve in both houses of the Legislature and on both of the state’s appellate courts. He was a member of the House of Representatives from 1970-1974 and served as a North Carolina senator from 1974-1980. Whichard also served on the North Carolina Court of Appeals from 1980-1986 and was elected to the North Carolina Supreme Court in 1986 where he served until 1998. He became dean of the Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law in 1999.

Whichard was a volunteer Board of Directors leader of the General Alumni Association during the University of North Carolina’s bicentennial and has served on the Board of Visitors and Board of Advisors of the schools of Public Health and Social Work. He is a charter member of the North Caroliniana Society and recently chaired the centennial celebration of the Order of the Golden Fleece into which he was inducted as an undergraduate.

He earned both a Master of Laws (LL.M) and a Doctor of Juridical Science (S.J.D.) from the University of Virginia. Whichard began his career as a law clerk to Justice (later Chief Justice) William H. Bobbitt of the North Carolina Supreme Court and was a practicing attorney with the Durham law firm of Powe, Porter, Alphin, and Whichard.

His book, Justice James Iredell, is the only definitive biography of the man who led the state’s Federalists in supporting ratification of the Constitution and was later appointed to the United States Supreme Court by President George Washington. Publisher of the book is the Carolina Academic Press.

Whichard was presented the Distinguished Service Medal at the annual alumni luncheon of the General Alumni Association on May 8.
