Abraham Receives Dean’s Award for Teaching, Research
Excellence

Dr. S. Thomas Abraham of Campbell University’s
School of Pharmacy recently received the Dean’s Award for Teaching
and Research Excellence. Abraham is an assistant professor of
Pharmacology and Toxicology.
Known for his achievements in both teaching and
research, Abraham was named the 2004 Professor of the Year by Campbell’s
second-year pharmacy students and awarded a grant from the National
Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health (NIH)
to study the basic science behind heart disease. He believes an enzyme
found in blood vessels could be specifically related to artherosclerosis,
coronary artery disease caused by the buildup of plaque or fatty
materials in the arteries.
A native of Katmandu, Nepal, Abraham received an
associate’s degree in chemistry/pre-medicine from Chowan College in
Murfreesboro, NC, and a Bachelor of Science in chemistry from Mars Hill
College in Mars Hill, NC. He completed his graduate education at the J.H.
Quillen College of Medicine at East Tennessee State University in
Johnson City, TN, where he received a Ph.D. in biomedical
science/pharmacology. He also completed a postdoctoral fellowship at
Weis Center for Research, Milton Hershey College of Medicine at Penn
State University in 1996. Prior to coming to Campbell, Abraham served as
an assistant professor of pharmaceutical science at Wilkes University
School of Pharmacy in Wilkes-Barre, PA.
The Campbell University School of Pharmacy was
established in 1986 as the first new school of pharmacy to open in the
United States in 35 years. In 1990, the charter class distinguished
itself with a 100 percent passage rate on state and national board
examinations. Subsequent classes have maintained a record of 99 percent
passage rate on the national board exam and 98 percent on state board
exams. The School is a member of the American Association of Colleges of
Pharmacy.
