Ismael Rivera |
Ismael Rivera, of Sanford, NC, has retired after 16
years as a foreign language professor at Campbell University. Rivera
joined the Campbell faculty as an assistant professor of foreign
language in 1991, but also taught at Campbell for a brief time in
1988-1989.
A native of Caguas, Puerto Rico, Rivera earned the
Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in political science and economics
with a specialization in Latin American Studies at George Washington
University. He also studied at the University of Michigan and received a
Master of Arts degree in Spanish from the University of North Carolina
at Chapel Hill.
A veteran of the Korean War, Rivera earned the Purple
Heart, the Bronze Star, and the Combat Infantry Badge for bravery.
Throughout his career at Campbell, Rivera has been just as dedicated to
his teaching responsibilities, according to Dr. Mark Hammond, dean of
the School of Arts and Sciences.
“His contributions to the education and lives of our
students have been outstanding,” said Hammond. “We shall be forever
grateful for his irrepressible humor, deep Christian spirit, and love
for students.”
Prior to coming to Campbell, Rivera enjoyed a
distinguished career as an American Foreign Service officer, serving as
a press attaché in Guatemala, Nigeria, and France, among other
assignments. He is the latest recipient of the Dean’s Excellence in
Teaching Award for Campbell’s College of Arts and Sciences.
He is married to the former Hazel Welch. They are the
parents of three children, Patricia, Kenneth, and Roland. They also have
three grandchildren.
