Harry Goldston Womble, owner of Goldston’s Beach, Incorporated, at
White Lake, NC, received the prestigious Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award
at Campbell University’s 118th commencement exercises on Monday,
May 10. Established in 1925 by the New York Southern Society, the award
celebrates the excellence of character and humanitarian service that
were the legacy of Algernon Sydney Sullivan, a prominent 19th century
lawyer, businessman, and philanthropist.
Campbell honored Womble for his extraordinary civic and Christian
service accomplishments. Serving on the boards of the Bladen County
Hospital, the Town of White Lake, and the North Carolina National Bank,
he has made an indelible impression on the minds of citizens throughout
North Carolina. He also served as the chief of the White Lake Volunteer
Fire Department.
Womble’s service to the Elizabethtown Baptist Church is legendary. He
has served the church as a deacon, a member of the Finance Committee,
and as a member of the building committee that relocated, planned, and
built the beautiful church and accompanying pastor’s home. He also
served his nation as a soldier during World War II.
A longtime supporter and benefactor of Campbell University, Womble
has served numerous terms as a trustee and as a member of the
Presidential Board of Advisors.
Womble and his deceased wife, Johnnie, are the parents of four
children, Donna W. Stewart, H. Goldston Womble, Jr., John H. Womble, and
Molly W. Owen. He is also the stepfather of David Cribb. Womble has
seven grandchildren. His wife, Betty Perry Womble, herself a shining
example of service to others, is the organist for the Elizabethtown
Baptist Church.
