|

Ed Johnson |
What do vampires, Al Jazeera and Garrison Keillor
have in common?
They are topics to be discussed Saturday, May 15, at
Campbell University’s Communication and Faith academic conference in
the Lundy-Fetterman School of Business building.
Researchers from Kentucky, Illinois, Virginia,
Tennessee and North Carolina and other venues will present academic
research as part of the Department of Mass Communication academic
conference.
“The conference is designed to explore the natural
intersection of communication and faith,” said conference host Dr.
Edward Johnson, advertising professor at Campbell. He will present
research on the Baptists in North Carolina.
The day-long event will include papers on Buffy the
Vampire Slayer and the ‘Myth of Redemptive Violence,’ The Al Jazeera
Satellite Television Network: Arabic Free Expression and the bin Laden
Tapes, Images and Uses of Religion in the Humor of Garrison Keillor
among other research findings.
“The topics reflect the rich variety of academics who
embrace faith,” explained Dr. Michael Ray Smith, chairman of the
Department of Mass Communication. He will present research on a
Christian news magazine compared to mainstream news magazines.
In sum, nearly 40 academics will meet for this
conference.
