Tutterow Leads Worship in Divinity Hooding Ceremony

Michael Tutterow |
The Campbell University Divinity School celebrated
its fourth graduating class in the school’s seven-year history at
the service of covenant and hooding held on May 9 at Memorial
Baptist Church. The Rev. Michael Tutterow, pastor of Winter Park
Baptist Church in Wilmington, NC, delivered the sermon at the
ceremony, which including the hooding of the 38 Divinity graduates
receiving Master of Divinity or Master of Arts in Christian
Education degrees.
Using Jeremiah 1:4-10 and Luke 4:14-21 as his texts,
Tutterow delivered a message titled “The Word of the Lord Happened to
Me.”
Based on the scripture and personal experiences from his
own life, Tutterow explained ways in which God’s word of grace, word of
growth, and word of love can be manifested in the lives of believers. He
recounted an experience as a seminary student when he was sent to
minister at an extended care facility to a man unable to speak because
of a stroke. After sitting with him a while, the man started to hum a
hymn. Tutterow recognized the hymn and began to sing the words. Every
time he visited, they would worship together, with the man humming and
Tutterow singing along. “In a hospital room with a man who couldn’t
speak, the word of the Lord happened to me,” he said.
“This very day the word of the Lord is happening,”
Tutterow said. “Every day is a day when the word of the Lord is
happening. We’re here this afternoon with you graduates because
somewhere along the way the word of the Lord happened or you would not
be here.”
Tutterow earned his bachelor’s degree in education from
Wright State University in Dayton, OH. He went on to earn his Master of
Divinity degree from the Candler School of Theology at Emory University
in Atlanta, GA. He has been senior pastor at the 1,400-member Winter
Park Baptist Church since 1994.
Dr. Michael Cogdill, dean of the Divinity School,
presided at the ceremony. Degree candidates were hooded by Cogdill and
Dr. Bruce Powers, associate dean of the Divinity School. A reception
honoring the graduates was held immediately following the ceremony.
