Cartledge Receives Honorary Doctorate
Dr. Tony Cartledge, editor and president of the
Biblical Recorder, received an honorary Doctor of Divinity
degree during Campbell University’s commencement exercises on
Monday, May 10. Cartledge was the featured speaker at Campbell’s
Baccalaureate service, which took place on Sunday, May 9.
A prolific writer and storyteller, Cartledge has
contributed articles to a number of newspapers and denominational
magazines. In addition to his regular column in the Biblical Recorder,
he has contributed academic articles and book reviews to scholarly
journals, and has authored several books, including a massive commentary
on 1 and 2 Samuel.
Before joining the staff of the Biblical Recorder
in 1998, Cartledge served 26 years as a pastor, spending the last 10 of
those years as senior pastor at Woodhaven Baptist Church in Cary, NC. He
had earlier pastored churches in Boone, NC; Oxford, NC; Hogansville, GA;
and Lincolnton, GA.
A graduate of the University of Georgia, Cartledge also
earned a Master of Divinity degree from Southeastern Baptist Theological
Seminary and a Doctor of Philosophy from Duke University. He is married
to the former Jan Rush, and they are the parents of three children:
Russ, Bethany (who died in 1994 at the age of 7), and Samuel.
