Thornton Elected President of State Political Science Association
David W. Thornton, associate professor and director of
Government Studies at Campbell University, was recently elected president of the
North Carolina Political Science Association (NCPSA). The purpose of the North
Carolina Political Science Association is to provide a forum for discussion and
analysis for professors, students and practitioners of politics and public
policy in North Carolina. The organization also sponsors an annual statewide
conference in the spring, distributes a newsletter twice annually and
coordinates contacts at all North Carolina institutions of higher learning.
Dr. Thornton has taught at Campbell since 1994 with the
Department of Government, History and Justice. He holds undergraduate and
master’s degrees from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He also
earned a Ph.D. in International Relations from the University of South Carolina.
Prior to coming to Campbell, Thornton wrote and published a book, “Airbus
Industrie: The Politics of an International Industrial Collaboration,”
reflecting his concern for economics and world affairs.
Thornton has served on the NCPSA Executive Council
since 1998 as both vice president and secretary of the organization. “It’s an
honor to work with such a great group of people,” says Thornton. “I enjoy
traveling to different parts of the state and visiting the schools.”
As president, Thornton hopes to promote the
participation of smaller schools, as well as to encourage student involvement,
both undergraduate and graduate. Thornton was elected president at the NCPSA’s
annual conference and business meeting held at the University of North Carolina
at Pembroke in March.
