Campbell Chancellor Honored by Baptist State Convention
Dr. Norman Adrian Wiggins, chancellor and former president of Campbell
University, was honored recently by the North Carolina Baptist Foundation.
Wiggins received the Baptist Heritage Award for his contributions to the
advancement of the Baptist State Convention and to Baptist life in North
Carolina.
Wiggins is one of only two Baptist college presidents
to serve as president of the North Carolina Baptist State Convention. He is also
the former president of the Southern Baptist Sunday School Board and the
National Fellowship of Baptist Men. The convention’s statewide newspaper, the
“Biblical Recorder,” named Wiggins one of the “Most Influential Baptist Leaders
of the Twentieth Century.”
“Dr. Wiggins has stood as a giant among all North Carolina Baptists,” said one
foundation spokesman. “His statesmanship and diplomacy have been unifying forces
in the life of the Baptist State Convention.”
A native of Burlington, N.C., Wiggins received his
Associate of Arts degree from Campbell College and his Bachelor of Arts from
Wake Forest College, where he graduated magna cum laude. He went on to obtain an
LL.B. from the Wake Forest College School of Law (cum laude) and LL.M. and J.S.D.
degrees from Columbia University School of Law.
After becoming president of Campbell in 1967, Wiggins
was instrumental in establishing one of the best trust management programs in
the nation and adding five professional schools-the Norman Adrian Wiggins School
of Law, the Lundy-Fetterman School of Business, the School of Education, the
School of Pharmacy and the Divinity School. Under Wiggins’ leadership, Campbell
also strengthened its undergraduate program and established one of the foremost
ROTC programs in the region. He led in the establishment of education programs
for military personnel at Fort Bragg, Pope Air Force Base, New River Air Base,
and Camp Lejeune and initiated substantial international programs, most notably
with Tunku Abdul Rahman College in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
He is the author of three books, “Wills and Administration of Estate in North
Carolina,” “Estates and Trusts” and “Trust Functions and Services.” He is a
former editor of the “North Carolina Will Manual” and has been a contributor to
many legal periodicals.
Among other honors, Wiggins has received the Distinguished Service Awards from
The Newcomen Society of America and the National Association of College and
University Attorneys; The Commander’s Award for Public Service; the
International Freedom of Mobility Award; the Order of the Long Leaf Pine Award;
and the John J. Parker Award. Wiggins was also named one of the top educational
leaders in the state in the book “The North Carolina Century: Tar Heels Who Made
a Difference, 1900-2000.”
In addition, Wiggins is the former president of the
North Carolina Association of Independent Colleges and Universities; the
National Association of College and University Attorneys; the Association of
Presidents of Independent Colleges and Universities; and the North Carolina
Association of Colleges and Universities.
