Campbell Chancellor Honored by Baptist State Convention

Dr. Norman Adrian Wiggins, chancellor and former president of Campbell University, was honored recently by the North Carolina Baptist Foundation. Wiggins received the Baptist Heritage Award for his contributions to the advancement of the Baptist State Convention and to Baptist life in North Carolina.
Wiggins is one of only two Baptist college presidents to serve as president of the North Carolina Baptist State Convention. He is also the former president of the Southern Baptist Sunday School Board and the National Fellowship of Baptist Men. The convention’s statewide newspaper, the “Biblical Recorder,” named Wiggins one of the “Most Influential Baptist Leaders of the Twentieth Century.”
“Dr. Wiggins has stood as a giant among all North Carolina Baptists,” said one foundation spokesman. “His statesmanship and diplomacy have been unifying forces in the life of the Baptist State Convention.”
A native of Burlington, N.C., Wiggins received his Associate of Arts degree from Campbell College and his Bachelor of Arts from Wake Forest College, where he graduated magna cum laude. He went on to obtain an LL.B. from the Wake Forest College School of Law (cum laude) and LL.M. and J.S.D. degrees from Columbia University School of Law.
After becoming president of Campbell in 1967, Wiggins was instrumental in establishing one of the best trust management programs in the nation and adding five professional schools-the Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law, the Lundy-Fetterman School of Business, the School of Education, the School of Pharmacy and the Divinity School. Under Wiggins’ leadership, Campbell also strengthened its undergraduate program and established one of the foremost ROTC programs in the region. He led in the establishment of education programs for military personnel at Fort Bragg, Pope Air Force Base, New River Air Base, and Camp Lejeune and initiated substantial international programs, most notably with Tunku Abdul Rahman College in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
He is the author of three books, “Wills and Administration of Estate in North Carolina,” “Estates and Trusts” and “Trust Functions and Services.” He is a former editor of the “North Carolina Will Manual” and has been a contributor to many legal periodicals.
Among other honors, Wiggins has received the Distinguished Service Awards from The Newcomen Society of America and the National Association of College and University Attorneys; The Commander’s Award for Public Service; the International Freedom of Mobility Award; the Order of the Long Leaf Pine Award; and the John J. Parker Award. Wiggins was also named one of the top educational leaders in the state in the book “The North Carolina Century: Tar Heels Who Made a Difference, 1900-2000.”
In addition, Wiggins is the former president of the North Carolina Association of Independent Colleges and Universities; the National Association of College and University Attorneys; the Association of Presidents of Independent Colleges and Universities; and the North Carolina Association of Colleges and Universities.
