Campbell Receives Over $49,000 from LI-COR
Drs. Karen Guzman and Michelle Thomas, of Campbell
University’s Department of Biological Sciences, and Dr. Tim Bloom, of the
Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, recently received a grant for over
$49,000 from LI-COR Biosciences, a manufacturer of electronic instrumentation
for environmental, agricultural, and ecological research. The grant was awarded
through the company’s 2005 Genomics Educations Matching Fund program. The grant
included a DNA sequencing instrument and funding for advanced training for two
individuals at one of LI-COR’s facilities.
The DNA sequencing technology will be integrated into a
number of existing courses, used for student research, and may be used in the
development of new laboratories. This instrumentation will enable Campbell
students and faculty to use cutting edge technology including gene discovery and
two techniques that detect differences in DNA: Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP)
Identification and Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism (AFLP). These
technologies can be used to ask fundamental questions about organisms, how they
are related, and about their genetic makeup.
Founded in 1887, Campbell University is North
Carolina’s second largest private institution of higher education. Located in
Buies Creek, NC, just east of the center of the state, Campbell combines
academic excellence and Christian commitment. More information about Campbell
University is available on the Web site, www.campbell.edu.
