Art Majors See Future Artists in Entries
The children competing in the Erwin Area Chamber of Commerce Easter Coloring
Contest displayed signs of marked originality, according to judges Shaheen Day
and Toni-Lyn Keller. Both Campbell University art majors, Day and Keller
identified lots of potential and some possible future art majors.
“I was really impressed by some of the ideas that went
beyond the usual parameters,” said Day, who is majoring in graphic design. “The
color choices they used really stood out, and many showed a degree of
sophistication with color. I enjoyed looking at the artwork and seeing how the
children expressed themselves,” she said.
Day, a junior from Clayton, NC, is a graphic design
major, who said she loves working with children. She would like to work her way
up to creative director of an advertising agency and one day go into business
for herself.
Junior Toni-Lyn Keller, who is also majoring in graphic
design, likes doing anything with little kids. As a member and chairwoman of
Circle K, a campus service organization associated with Kiwanis, Keller, who is
from Fayetteville, NC, said she is used to performing projects like this.
“I really like little kids and I like art,” said
Keller. “I guess you could say this assignment was perfect for me.”
Both Keller and Day like the hands-on approach of
Campbell University’s Fine Arts Department. “The professors are very good at
building strong relationships with their students,” said Keller. “I like the
atmosphere and the people that I’ve met here.”
Day, who works as a Resident Assistant in Jones Hall,
also enjoys Campbell’s Christian atmosphere. She has been a member of the Gospel
Steppers, a dance team whose goal is to spread the word of God through stepping,
and currently sings with the university’s Gospel Choir.
“Campbell has a reputation for being outstanding,” Day
said. “I like the high educational and moral standards I find there.”
Approximately 200 children, ages pre-school to fourth
grade, entered the coloring contest which is held in conjunction with the Erwin
Chamber’s annual Easter egg hunt at Erwin Municipal Park. The winner of the
contest receives an Easter egg filled with goodies, and the second and
third-place winners get a chocolate Easter egg. Each winner receives a
certificate.
