Campbell Law Students Leave for Vienna
Third-year law students Rebecca Livert and Shanda Setzer left Wednesday, March
16, to compete in the 12th annual Willem C. Vis International Commercial Moot
Arbitration Competition in Vienna, Austria. The students were accompanied by
professor and coach, Alan Button, of Campbell’s Norman Adrian Wiggins School of
Law.
Livert, of Charlotte, NC, and Setzer, of Drexel, NC,
will compete against representatives from 153 law schools from six continents
around the world. The teams will argue a case that involves an agreement between
two companies located in different countries to buy and sell cocoa. Because of a
government embargo, the agreement was only partially performed. The law applied
to the case is the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International
Sale of Goods and the Swiss Rules of Arbitration.
This is the fifth year Campbell has competed in the
international competition, which requires each team to submit a memorandum in
support of the claimant and another memorandum on behalf of the respondent prior
to the event. The goal of the competition is to foster the study of
international commercial law and arbitration for resolution of international
business disputes through the law’s application to a problem of a client and to
train law leaders of tomorrow in methods of alternative dispute resolution.
Following orientation, oral hearings will begin on
Saturday, March 19, and continue through March 24. The Campbell team will argue
against several teams, including the University of Warsaw, Poland, Riga Graduate
School of Law in Latvia, the University of Geneva, Switzerland, and the
University of Paris 1, Pantheon-Sorbonne (France).
Second-year law students Karen Wang, of Cary, NC, and Frank Bradshaw, of
Clinton, NC, will represent Campbell in the annual William C. Vis Competition
(East) held in Hong Kong, April 5-10. Adjunct Professor Paul Ridgeway assists
Button in coaching the teams.
