Penny Promoted to Full Professor at Campbell
Dr.
Donald N. Penny has been promoted to full professor by Campbell University’s
Department of Religion. Penny joined the Campbell faculty as a religion
instructor in 1981.
Penny received a Bachelor of Arts in religion from Campbell in 1970, graduating
magna cum laude, and went on to obtain a Master of Divinity in theology from
Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, where he won the Broadman Seminarian
Award for Outstanding Achievement in Biblical Studies. He earned a Ph.D. in New
Testament Studies from Emory University.
“I try to be the number-one learner in the class along with the students,” Penny
said in 2003, when he received the Professor of the Year Award from Campbell’s
Student Government Association. “I learn something new in every course.”
Penny has published numerous articles in religious journals, including the
“Mercer Dictionary of the Bible” and the “Review and Expositor.” In 2002, he
co-wrote a textbook for introductory religion courses that introduces the Old
Testament and its significance for understanding the world into which Jesus
Christ was born, as well as his message and ministry and the establishment,
growth, and teachings of the church contained in the New Testament.
Penny is a member of the Society of Biblical Literature and the National
Association of Baptist Professors of Religion.
