Honor Society Underway In Mass
Communication
BUIES
CREEK—An honors society is underway in Campbell University’s Department of Mass
Communication.
Dr. J. Dean Farmer, a noted scholar in organizational communication, organized
Lambda Pi Eta, the undergraduate National Communication Honor Society of the
National Communication Association (NCA), your chapter active until 2006.
The new chapter will be called the Sigma Upsilon chapter of Lambda Pi Eta at
Campbell University.
“Our undergraduate students are doing primary research,” Farmer said. “One
presented at an NCA conference last year and one is scheduled to present this
spring. This kind of scholarship is what our new honor society will encourage.
NCA is a scholarly society and as such works to enhance the research, teaching,
and service produced by its members on topics of both intellectual and social
significance. It is the oldest and largest national organization to promote
communication scholarship and education. Founded in 1914 as the National
Association of Academic Teachers of Public Speaking, the society incorporated in
1950 as the Speech Association of America. The organization changed its name to
Speech Communication Association, in 1970. It adopted its present name in 1997.
NCA publishes nine academic journals, which are the leading publications in
their area of specialty.
Farmer is enthusiastic about the new chapter. He said, “By bringing this
organization to Campbell, student inductees will have a chance to interact with
outstanding students at other universities, promote professional development,
investigate graduate education, collaborate with faculty in scholarly pursuits,
engage in community service and stimulate interest in the field of
communication.
