Thornton to Head N.C. Political Science Association
Dr. David Thornton, associate professor of
government at Campbell University, is president-elect of the North
Carolina Political Science Association (NCPSA). Thornton has also
served as vice president and secretary of the organization.
The purpose of the NCPSA is to provide a forum for
learning about political science and all of its sub-fields. The
organization sponsors an annual statewide conference in the spring,
distributes a newsletter twice annually, and coordinates contacts at all
North Carolina institutions of higher learning.
“It’s a good organization,” said Thornton. “Schools from
all over the state participate. You really get to meet your colleagues
and learn about what they do, as well as gain new insight and exchange
ideas.”
Thornton said the NCPSA annual conference is also an
excellent opportunity for students to participate in the political
science arena. “It is good exposure for students, and it also makes
Campbell more visible,” he said.
Thornton served as program chair for the 2004 conference
held at Western Carolina University in March. He also chaired a panel
discussion titled “Theory and Practice of World Politics” and took part
in a roundtable discussion on assessment in higher education.
Thornton earned a bachelor’s degree in economics and
business administration and a master’s degree in European history from
the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He went on to receive a
Ph.D. in international relations from the University of South Carolina.
Prior to coming to Campbell, Thornton was an instructor
and lecturer in the Department of Government and International Studies
at the University of South Carolina. He is a member of the European
Union Studies Association and the International Studies Association. In
addition, he serves as faculty advisor to Campbell’s Model United
Nations student organization.
Founded in 1887, Campbell University is North Carolina’s
second largest private institution of higher education and the second
largest Baptist university in the world. Located in Buies Creek, NC,
just east of the center of the state, Campbell combines academic
excellence and Christian commitment.
