Campbell University government and history major
Stacy Thomas, who received the Marshall Undergraduate Scholarship
for 2003-2004, has completed a research project and 40-page paper
that attempts to determine whether or not Nazis received a fair
trial at Nuremberg after World War II.
Awarded by the George C. Marshall Research Library in
Lexington, VA, the Marshall Scholarship provides selected students an
opportunity to undertake research and writing projects using the
resources and collections of colleges and universities, as well as those
of the Marshall Research Library and other repositories.
Scholarship winners must choose subjects involving 20th
century diplomatic and military history or political affairs spanning a
period from 1898-1960, the approximate dates of George C. Marshall’s
public service, which includes his tenure as Secretary of State in the
aftermath of World War II and Secretary of Defense during the Korean
War. Scholars are nominated by their home institutions and work under
the direction of a departmental professor who determines appropriate
course credit. Thomas’ advisor, Dr. Rorin Platt, is an assistant
professor of history at Campbell.
A junior who currently resides in Warner-Robbins, GA,
Thomas’ interest in history and diplomatic relations was prompted by her
experiences and travels as a military dependent. Among other locations,
Thomas has lived in Crestview, FL; Denver, CO; Hawaii; and Wichita
Falls, TX.
“Not many people get to have this opportunity,” Thomas
said of the scholarship. “That’s why I thought I would go for it!”
Thomas serves as a resident assistant in Kitchin Hall
and is a member of Campus Crusade for Christ. She maintains a 4.0 grade
point average and is considering law school or the ministry as career
possibilities upon graduation from Campbell. Thomas is the daughter of
Rex and Pam Thomas of Warner-Robbins, GA. She also has a brother,
Garrett, 8, and a sister, Chelsea, 14.
Founded in 1887, Campbell University is North Carolina’s
second largest private institution of higher education and the second
largest Baptist university in the world. Located in Buies Creek, NC,
just east of the center of the state, Campbell combines academic
excellence and Christian commitment.
